Elements of Byron
Client: North Byron Beach Resort
Project Type: Resort
This five star resort was deigned to reflect the breathtaking beauty of its surroundings – a 40acre site located on the stunning beachfront at Belongil, Byron Bay. Bennett Constructions was engaged under a Design and Construct Contract to deliver this exceptional project.
Offering world class facilities, the works include restaurants, an external wood fired pizza oven and outdoor area, cafes, reception, high end function rooms, day spa, gymnasium, beach entry pool over one acre in size with a fire pit, administration and back of house facilities, housekeeping, commercial kitchens and private dining.
The brief came with a catch. That was, ‘We want a building shaped like a sand dune’. As the images portray, the design is completely original, and with this comes many design and construction challenges.
The roof structure is post tensioned CHS steel frame spanning up to 38 metres tied together with graphite composite purlins and capped with a moulded aluminium roof. This is innovation and creative construction at its best.
The roof area is 4,600m2 with over 50% of the external walls being operable to enable the natural environment to dominate the experience. The roof is significantly larger than the habitable spaces to enable large overhangs to heighten this experience.
This all flows out over expansive native landscape gardens to the resort pool with beach entries and infinity edges leading to the ocean views beyond.
This premier project is scheduled to open February 2016.
