Oakes Oval Lismore played host to the first ever AFL match in the Northern Rivers region between the Sydney Swans and the Gold Coast Suns on the weekend as apart of the AFL JLT Community Series after the redevelopment of the complex was delivered by Bennett Constructions in July 2018. The event has been heralded as an resounding success for Lismore and the region with 4,918 patrons through the gate in attendance for the day.

The event has been the talk of the town and well covered by local media delivering strong stimulus to the local economy. All reports in regards to the quality of the facility have been excellent with the complex being declared as a highly suitable to host regional sporting events now and into the future. In particular the quality of the ground surface being the stand out feature of Oakes Oval as it condition for the game was immaculate. With the Sydney stadium crisis currently playing out and the failure of the SCG playing surface who knows what the future holds for Oakes Oval.

As for the match result for the day the Sydney Swans proved strong and experienced running out winders 19.9 (123) to 11.15 (81) over the Gold Coast Suns on a sizzling March Day in Lismore.
